From Ascot to Wimbledon and the Queen’s Official Birthday, London is bursting with exciting events throughout June; and there’s even the small matter of a World Cup to look forward to!
In the latest Allens Hire blog, we’re looking ahead to the best that June has to offer. Why not let us know what you have planned in the coming weeks?
FIFA World Cup 2014
Where better to start our rundown than the biggest global event on the list? The World Cup in Brazil kicks off on Thursday 12 June and guarantees to have its own unique flavour and samba atmosphere. A few thousand barmy England supporters are expected to head to Brazil but there are plenty of great ways to catch the action right here in the UK.
Many London venues are going all out to capture the colour and excitement of the world’s biggest sporting event. The Whirled Cinema, near Brixton, will be showing a number of big games including England’s group games, as part of their Whirled Cup season. Innumerable bars throughout the capital will be capturing the action on the big screen. Highlights include Sushi Samba, the stunning Brazilian/Japanese restaurant at the top of the Heron Tower and Guanabara, with its samba dancers and football tricksters.
Trooping the Colour
It’s the Queen’s Official Birthday on Saturday 14 June, which means that it is once again time to enjoy the breathtaking pageantry of Trooping the Colour, Her Majesty’s birthday parade. What began as a military exercise to ensure that soldiers could recognise their own on the frenzied field of battle is now an unmissable spectacle, providing plenty of opportunities to spot royals and other dignitaries.
Visitors can watch the event for free by lining up along the Mall or the edge of St James’ Park, but you’ll have to get there early to enjoy an ideal view. Alternatively, you could grab a sneak preview this coming Saturday at the Major General’s Review, a full scale dress rehearsal which always takes place a week earlier. The Queen won’t be there at Horse Guard’s Parade until the big day, but the grandeur of the event is much the same.
There will, however, be a royal or two at this event. Royal Ascot is the centrepiece of Ascot’s racing calendar and one of the biggest horse races in Europe. The event is steeped in tradition and was founded more than 300 years ago by Queen Anne. It is attended by the Royal family and every day begins with a procession from Windsor Castle to the racecourse.
Royal Ascot takes place from 17 to 21 June and if you’re not a fan of the equine action there are plenty of other sights to behold, as an illustrious list of guests attempt to dazzle their peers with sky-scraping hats.
At the end of the month, the world’s finest tennis players converge upon the All England Club to see the month out in style. All eyes will be on reigning champion Andy Murray, to see if the British superstar can retain the trophy which he gave us back after a 70 year absence. Of course, regardless of the tennis action, Wimbledon is one of the most famous sights in the London sporting calendar.
Few events this month will match the excitement which builds on Henman Hill (or Murray Mount as some justly call it now) when crowds gather to capture the action on the big screen.
