  • Why Champagne Deserves A Wine Glass Not Just A Flute

19 June 2026

Why Champagne Deserves a Wine Glass, Not Just a Flute

The Champagne flute has been part of celebrations for so long that it feels almost inseparable from the drink itself. Tall, elegant and instantly recognisable, it does a wonderful job of showing off a stream of bubbles. Yet when it comes to actually tasting Champagne, the traditional flute is not always the best choice.

Champagne is, after all, a wine. Beneath the bubbles, it can offer layers of citrus, orchard fruit, flowers, minerality, brioche, toast and creamy texture. A narrow flute leaves very little room for those aromas to develop, which means some of the wine’s most interesting qualities can easily be missed.

As wine professional Victoria James neatly puts it:

“Champagne is wine first.”

That simple idea explains why many sommeliers, producers and glassmakers now favour a wider, tulip-shaped Champagne wine glass instead.

What Is Wrong with the Traditional Flute?

There is nothing inherently wrong with a flute. It looks elegant, keeps the bubbles visually prominent and works particularly well for parties or a quick celebratory toast. The problem is that its tall, narrow shape places almost all the emphasis on effervescence.

Because the bowl is so slim, there is little room for the wine to open up. Swirling is awkward, the aromas have less space to gather, and the narrow rim can make it difficult to appreciate the full character of the Champagne.

Victoria James makes the point rather well:

“A flute can make a profound wine taste simple.”

That matters most when drinking more complex styles, such as vintage Champagne, prestige cuvées or wines that have spent longer ageing on their lees. These wines can be rich, layered and expressive, but they need the right glass to show it.

Why a Wider Champagne Glass Works Better

A well-designed Champagne wine glass has a broader bowl that narrows towards the rim. This allows the wine to breathe while still concentrating its aromas towards the nose.

The difference is immediately noticeable. Fruit becomes more expressive, toasted and brioche-like notes are easier to detect, and the overall texture of the wine feels more complete. The bubbles are still there, but they no longer dominate every sip.

A wider bowl also makes the mousse feel softer and more integrated. Instead of the bubbles seeming sharp or aggressive, they become part of the Champagne’s texture, giving the wine a rounder and more elegant feel.

Maximilian Riedel describes the effect as:

“An explosion of aromas and taste.”

That may sound dramatic, but it captures the point. The right glass does not change the wine; it simply allows more of it to be experienced.

Dom Perignon‘s chef de cave, Richard Geoffroy, is another fervent critic of the flute and advocates Riedel’s Pinot Noir glassware for DP Rose.

Champagne Deserves to Be Treated Like Wine

One of the biggest advantages of a Champagne wine glass is that it encourages you to approach the drink as you would any other fine wine.

You can observe the colour properly, swirl it gently and notice how the aromas change as the wine spends time in the glass. This is especially valuable when Champagne is served with food, rather than simply poured for a toast.

Champagne is wonderfully versatile at the table. Its acidity, freshness and texture make it a natural partner for seafood, fried foods, poultry, cheese and a wide range of other dishes. When served in a wider glass, those qualities become more apparent, and the wine has more opportunity to complement the food.

What Is RIEDEL’s Sparkling Point?

A common concern about moving away from the flute is that a wider glass will cause Champagne to lose its bubbles too quickly.

This is where RIEDEL’s sparkling point comes in.

The sparkling point is a tiny nucleation point at the bottom of the glass. It gives dissolved carbon dioxide a place to gather and form bubbles, encouraging a fine, steady stream of effervescence through the wine.

It is a clever solution because it allows the glass to have a broader, more aroma-friendly bowl without losing the visual appeal of rising bubbles. You get the flavour and complexity of a wine glass, together with the sparkle people naturally expect from Champagne.

RIEDEL Champagne Glasses with a Sparkling Point

We offer three RIEDEL collections that feature a sparkling point: Veritas, Performance and Veloce. Each has its own look and feel, but all three are designed to show Champagne in a more complete and expressive way.

The RIEDEL Veritas Champagne Wine Glass is a refined and understated choice. Its lightweight construction and elegant proportions make it suitable for both formal occasions and relaxed dining.

The bowl gives the wine enough room to develop, while the tapered rim helps focus the aromas. The sparkling point at the base keeps the bubbles moving, so the glass feels both classic and thoughtfully designed.

The RIEDEL Performance Champagne Glass is more distinctive in appearance, thanks to the collection’s signature optical effect.

The sculpted bowl creates visual interest and provides a striking backdrop for the wine’s colour and bubbles. At the same time, the shape gives Champagne the space it needs to reveal more of its aroma, flavour and texture.

It is a particularly appealing choice for entertaining, celebrating or anyone who enjoys glassware with a little more presence.

The RIEDEL Veloce Champagne Wine Glass has a more contemporary look, with a light feel and elegant diamond-shaped bowl.

Its proportions allow the Champagne to open up beautifully, while the narrower rim concentrates the aromas. The sparkling point helps maintain a lively stream of bubbles, making Veloce a strong choice for modern table settings and anyone who prefers exceptionally light stemware.

Are Flutes Ever the Better Choice?

Flutes still have their place. They are practical for receptions, easy to arrange in large numbers and instantly create a sense of occasion.

For a quick toast, they work perfectly well.

However, when you are opening a carefully chosen bottle and want to appreciate the wine properly, a Champagne wine glass is usually the better option. It reveals more aroma, more texture and more flavour, while still preserving the sparkle that makes Champagne so enjoyable.

The flute celebrates the bubbles. A Champagne wine glass celebrates the whole wine.

The Final Verdict

The traditional flute may be iconic, but it does not always allow Champagne to show its full character.

A purpose-designed Champagne wine glass offers more space for aroma, flavour and texture to develop, while RIEDEL’s sparkling point ensures that the bubbles remain part of the experience.

For anyone who wants to get more from every bottle, our RIEDEL Veritas, Performance and Veloce Champagne glasses offer a more thoughtful and rewarding way to enjoy Champagne.
