Riedel Glassware taste test wins Allens seal of approval

28 Jan 16 By: Lene McGuinness

Riedel, makers of world renowned wine glassware with over 260 years in the industry, recently visited the team at Allens HQ with a wine tasting challenge to prove how much difference their specially designed glasses can actually make. Hand-blown wine glasses have long been identified with having thin stems, aesthetically pleasing bases and a touch and feel which broadcasts their quality. Riedel have developed their technology to the point where their machine blown glassware is now equal in quality to their hand-blown, but for a fraction of the cost.

Riedel’s glasses are designed and shaped specifically to help enhance the taste of different wines, having worked in conjunction with wine makers over several years to develop glassware that optimises the entire wine tasting experience. In Riedel’s recent visit, Allens staff were firstly shown a series of styles and shapes of wine glasses to emphasise how it can make a difference to the taste – but the proof is in the testing! The team tried a range of wines with samples tasted from both Riedel glassware and standard glasses to help compare and contrast. Amongst other things, they learned that a Pinot Noir tastes noticeably better when the glass directs it to the tip of the tongue rather than the sides of the mouth, where it can taste acidic.

Terry McGuinness, Sales Director said “this was a great team building event. Our staff without exception enjoyed the evening and found it incredibly informative”. Kevin McGuinness, Managing Director of Allens, also present, said “We were given specific wines to taste in the grape specific wine glass alongside tasting them in a variety of other shaped glasses in no particular order. It was incredible the difference – everyone agreed that in the right wine glass the wine tasted better!”
