A Guide to the Coming Seasonal Events

13 Nov 15 By: Lene McGuinness

The end of the year is always a relatively busy time in terms of parties and events. With Christmas approaching, and more people in the UK beginning to celebrate Thanksgiving, the list of potential occasions you will be celebrating is most likely growing. Here at Allens Hire we provide an extensive range of furniture and catering equipment available for hire, so if you are planning an event over the next few weeks, here are some ideas for your preparation.

Thanksgiving

As mentioned in our blog last month, Thanksgiving is becoming increasingly popular in the UK, particularly in London and the surrounding areas. Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday which is primarily celebrated in the USA and Canada as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of harvest. Traditionally, Thanksgiving is celebrated with a large roast dinner, turkey, vegetables, and a sweet pie for dessert. As the celebrations happen every year on the third Thursday of November, this year Thanksgiving is taking place on 26th November, so you still have a couple of weeks to plan your event!

St Nicholas’ Day

St Nicholas’ Day is celebrated as a Christian festival on 6th December; another celebration which is becoming increasingly popular in the UK. Typically St Nicholas’ Day is marked in European countries such as Germany, Poland, Ukraine and the Netherlands, by exchanging gifts and children waiting for St Nicholas to arrive. The occasion can also be a great time to have a pre-Christmas meal – why not host your work Christmas party on St Nicholas’ Day this year and celebrate both? If you would like any ideas or guidance on where to begin, read our party planning guide for the festive season.

Hanukkah

Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday lasting 8 days and is also known as the Festival of Lights, and falls between the end of November and late December each year. The festival is celebrated in memory of the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem in the 2nd Century BC. Traditions include light the nine-branched menorah, playing dreidel and eating latkes and fried doughnuts. If you are planning on preparing a large feast for Hanukkah this year, take a look at our ranges of furniture and kitchen equipment available for hire.

Christmas

To celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, Christians celebrate Christmas each year on 25th December. Traditions vary slightly but most involve a large feast, decorating your home with a Christmas tree and other decorations, as well as exchanging gifts. Christmas is widely celebrated in Western countries, from gatherings at home to large events with work colleagues, various parties and festivities take place.
